Abstract
This paper presents a systematic approach to predict the structural ch aracteristics of power systems following large disturbances. Specifica lly, this paper uses the normal form of vector fields to predict the o nset of the interarea separation in power systems following large dist urbances. The normal form method is well established in the dynamical systems theory literature. The paper develops an analytically based in dex which identifies the onset of the interarea separation. The propos ed approach has been applied to the 50-generator IEEE test system. The results obtained indicate that the proposed index effectively capture s the structural characteristics of the system dynamic behavior and ac curately predicts the nature of the system dynamic performance followi ng large disturbances.
