We report the rare development of a myoepithelial carcinoma in a pleom
orphic adenoma involving the minor salivary glands in the buccal mucos
a of a 78-year-old female. Tumor presented as a small asymptomatic lef
t buccal mass. The initial dominant component of the neoplasm was a pl
eomorphic adenoma, while the minor component was a myoepithelial carci
noma. Recurrences of tumor after 2 and then 5 years were excised. Hist
opathological examination of the last tissue removed showed a pure myo
epithelial carcinoma of the minor salivary glands with out evidence fo
r a pleomorphic adenoma. The clinical features, therapy, diagnosis, hi
stopathology and literature are reviewed.
