The existence of magnetostatic surface waves (MSSWs) in a ferromagneti
c half-space with an inhomogeneous magnetic-anisotropy field is predic
ted for the case when the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the
surface. In the homogeneous case, this geometry supports only bulk ma
gnetostatic waves (BMSWs). It is found that the inhomogeneity of the m
agnetic-anisotropy field results in the deviation of the magnetization
vector in the near-surface layer from the normal to the surface, thus
giving rise to an MSSW.
