South Korean universities are currently at various stages of advanceme
nt in their use of electronic communication. Networking provision for
universities is expected to improve considerably over the next few yea
rs. There is therefore a need to examine their present usage of commun
ication technologies, how this depends on the level of facilities avai
lable and what the implications are for their future development. The
study described here investigates usage at a stratified sample of Sout
h Korean universities via a questionnaire survey. It also examines the
factors affecting use via a series of interviews. The results suggest
that, though infrastructural limitations are important, optimal deplo
yment of communication technologies will require organisational change
s within the university system.
