A careful analysis of the electron ionization mass spectra of chalcone
s reveals the presence of [M-15](+.) and [M-16](+) ions which, by coll
ision experiments, accurate mass measurements and deuterium labelling
have been proved to originate by primary methyl and methane loss respe
ctively, These findings suggest the existence of a population of molec
ular ions of chalcone exhibiting a structure different from the dibenz
o-cycloheptadienone structure proposed in the literature. (C) 1998 Joh
