Abstract
A short review of early work on the cross-wind response of masts and s ome full scale failures has been presented to introduce recent measure ments of the response of some large cantilevered circular steel tubes in the 1 MW wind tunnel at Monash University. It has been concluded th at the mass-damping parameter cannot be used alone to define critical response, and that for analytical models to be useful they must includ e amplitude dependent effects which will predict ''lock-in'' behaviour which has been characterised here by the peak factor.
