Cj. Rodger et Rl. Dowden, POSITION DETERMINATION OF RED SPRITES BY SCATTERING OF VLF SUBIONOSPHERIC TRANSMISSIONS, Geophysical research letters, 25(3), 1998, pp. 281-284
VLF sprites are identified by high angle scattering of VLF transmissio
ns by the highly conducting plasma columns which are observed as the l
uminous structure of ''red sprites''. By using multiple receivers and/
or transmitters the location of the sprite plasma can be determined us
ing existing VLF methods. It is shown that the complex electrical stru
cture of sprites leads to uncertainties in the position determination.
However, these are normally no more than the lateral width of the spr
ite structure itself.
