The aims of the present study was (a) to examine the relationship betw
een parental bonding and various personality disorders, when the effec
t of a lifetime depressive disorder was statistically controlled for,
and (b) to examine the relationship between parental bonding and a lif
etime depressive disorder when the effects of various personality diso
rders were accounted for, The study included 135 psychiatric outpatien
ts and 41 healthy controls. The patients were diagnosed according to D
SNI-III-R axis I and axis II. Results indicated that obsessive-compuls
ive personality disorder was associated with reports of lower levels o
f paternal care and higher levels of paternal overprotection, while cl
uster B personality disorder was associated with reports of high paren
tal overprotection. Avoidant, dependent, and cluster A personality dis
orders were not associated with abnormal parental bonding. Lifetime de
pressive disorders were associated with reports of low maternal care a
nd high maternal overprotection when the effect of a personality disor
der was accounted for.
