Ai. Bortun et al., SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ION-EXCHANGE PROPERTIES OF SPHERICALLY GRANULATED TITANIUM PHOSPHATE, Solvent extraction and ion exchange, 15(3), 1997, pp. 515-532
Spherically granulated titanium phosphate of formula TiO1.25(OH)(0.47)
(H2PO4)(0.77)(HPO4)(0.13). 2.3H(2)O (THP) was synthesized by a gel met
hod. The material was characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffra
ction, TGA and P-31 MAS NMR spectroscopy methods. Ion exchange of alka
li, alkaline earth and some other di- and trivalent metal cations by T
HP was studied in both batch and column conditions. It was found that
THP is a weak acid cation exchanger with a maximum ion exchange capaci
ty of 4.7 meq/g. It exhibits a high affinity for heavy metal cations (
Pb2+, Cr3+, Ba2+, Cs+). Exchange of micro amounts of some polyvalent c
ations was studied on salt forms (Na, K) of THP. It was shown that the
conversion of the exchanger into the salt form enhances significantly
its ion exchange performance for transition and heavy metal cations.
THP converted into Na+ or K+ ion Corm adsorbs up to 1 meq/g of d-metal
s in the presence of 3 (M) under bar alkali metal nitrates and shows K
-d > 10(3) - 10(4) ml/g. Thus spherically granulated titanium phosphat
e can be recommended for separation and selective recovery of toxic or
valuable cations from complex solutions (wastes, technological soluti
ons, reagents purification.
