As the old rules of war and of noncombatance are disregarded, the plig
ht of civilians, especially of children and young people, takes on an
increased significance. Unfortunately, much of the scientific literatu
re on the effects of war has not been based on these populations. This
article offers a framework for examining these populations' responses
, as well as those of populations exposed to more traditional warfare.
