The review concerns the present state in the field of thermodynamic mo
delling of processes involved in the production and processing of mate
rials. Basic experimental methods for obtaining the thermodynamic data
mainly of solid substances are presented and estimation of the data i
s discussed. Commonly used procedures for expression of temperature an
d pressure dependencies of thermodynamic functions of pure substances
and various thermodynamic models used for the description of solid sol
utions, melts, and aqueous solutions of electrolytes are also mentione
d. Selected papers presenting the results of thermodynamic calculation
s for various systems important in metallurgy and materials engineerin
g are surveyed.
