The K-40, Cs-134 and Cs-137 contents of 14 species of basydomycetes co
llected from June to November 1995 in European countries were measured
by high resolution, hyperpure germanium gamma-ray spectrometry on the
same samples: fresh and dry. Due to their cesium content, their ready
availability and their representative food matrix, mushrooms are an i
deal reference material. Mushrooms also appear to be relevant as bioin
dicators of topsoil contamination, although the boletaccaea species se
em to be better indicators than the cantharellacea. (C) 1997 Elsevier
