Abstract
This article reviews court cases pertaining to infringements on academ ic freedom and considers if tenure is necessary fn particular, the aut hor mises issues suck as how the First Amendment protects the academic freedom of faculty and if there are alternatives that might provide e qual safeguards. Although the author weighs the pros and cons of tenur e, he concluder that without tenure, academic freedom is jeopardized.
