The recent massacre of villagers in Chiapas by a landlordist paramilit
ary army while the police looked on, is just one in a series of occurr
ences directed at wiping out the social and political support base of
the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) which had in January
1994 led the Chiapas uprising and had forced the Mexican state to sign
the San Andreas peace accord. The state has done little to implement
the terms of the accord.
