Introduction: Children with ''nursing bottle syndrome'' and long stand
ing teeth destructions and no treatment so far were examined for accom
panying pathological changes in the bacterial flora of the mouth and a
lterations due to chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa and the alve
olar jawbone. Methods: In the years between 1993 and 1996, out of 200
annual p atients with ''nurse bottle syndrome'' four were selected bec
ause of their extreme condition. Besides caries diagnosis and clinical
documentation, microbiological and histopathological examinations wer
e carried out. Results: Diagnosis and therapy of cases of giant cell r
eparative granuloma, oral candida infection, actinomycotic bone seques
tration and displaced eruption of permanent maxillary incisors due to
the persistance of suppurated temporary teeth are presented. Conclusio
ns: These examples of serious complications of the ''nursing bottle sy
ndrome'' demonstrate that it is still urgently necessary to inform par
ents about the disease and its consequences, but mainly its prevention
by dental care.
