Abstract
Significant advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of artific ial transporters appeared in the past year which provide insights into natural transporters and suggest directions for regulation of transpo rt. Parallel developments in the control of bilayer formation and mole cular recognition by synthetic lipids have led to simple mimics of 'wh ole cell' types of processes.
