Phanerochaete flava is a conspicuous, bright yellow resupinate, wood-i
nhabiting basidiomycete encountered in the subtropical wet and subtrop
ical moist forest life zones in Puerto Rico. Characterized by abundant
, white to yellow hyphal cords with numerous hyaline crystals, this sp
ecies appears to be involved in the immobilization of nutrients follow
ing disturbances, such as hurricanes and logging, that leave woody deb
ris on the forest floor. Basidiomata are redescribed and illustrated.
In addition, Peniophora subiculosa is placed in synonymy under P. flav
a, and a combination, Phanerochaete exigua, is proposed.
