Abstract
In this introduction to the special issue, the authors briefly review current trends in optical computing and then explain how the six tutor ial articles elaborate on fundamental concepts. The editors assembled this collection of articles in the hope of a closer interaction with t he broader computer science and engineering community. They also provi de a guide to further reading on optics.
