Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) engaged in implementing small an
d micro enterprise (SME) projects in underdeveloped nations are often
interested in achieving sustainability beyond the project phase. This
article identifies several key aspects of a ''sustainable'' institutio
n and provides a sample of analytical tools for designing or monitorin
g SME efforts. The authors provide a definition of sustainability that
considers both the continuity of the implementing agencies as well as
the continuation of project benefits.
