Abstract
Highly compact 1 x 32 splitters were fabricated using silica-based pla nar lightwave circuit (PLC) technologies. The chip size was reduced to 6 x 24mm(2) by using a 127 mu m-pitch fibre array and 0.4%Delta waveg uides with a 15mm bending radius. This is similar to 1/4 of the size o f a conventional 1 x 32 splitter. The assembled splitter modules showe d low insertion losses of < 16.9dB.
