The present paper studies the influence of the chain's chemical struct
ure on the thermal behavior of some polyethers. The investigated polym
ers were synthesised by phase transfer catalysis using 3,3-bis(chlorom
ethyl)oxetane and various bisphenols as monomers. The polymers were ch
aracterized by H-1-NMR spectroscopy, DSC technique and optical microsc
opy in polarized light. Theoretical conformational studies were also p
erformed. Among the studied polymers, only those containing 4,4'-dihyd
roxyazobenzene and 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone can present liquid cryst
alline behavior. The copolyethers containing the 4,4'-dihydroxydipheny
l do not present liquid crystalline behavior.
