A new polydentate ligand able to generate homotrinuclear complexes has
been designed. The synthetic process is as follows: the reaction of 3
-formyl-salicylic acid, H(2)fsa, with o-amino-benzoic acid, Hamb, lead
s to a Schiff base, 3-((N-2-carboxyphenyl)formimidoyl)salicylic acid (
H(3)fsaamb), which has been characterized from its FTIR and H-1-NMR sp
ectra. The reaction of H(3)fsaamb with MX2 salts ia a Na2CO3 or LiOH w
ater/ethanol solution yields M-3(fsaamb)(2) . nH(2)O neutral complexes
(M-II = Mn-II, Ni-II, Cu-II, Zn-II). The four complexes have been cha
racterized by means of chemical analysis and spectroscopic methods. Th
e magnetic data for the Mn-II, Ni-II, Cu-II complexes are in agreement
with the presence of three paramagnetic centers within the homotrinuc
lear species.
