This paper analyzes the features of the monitoring of the reserving po
wer of transmission electron microscopes from the image of point struc
tures in amorphous films when phase-contrast imaging is used. It shows
that, because fullerenelike particles 0.5-1 nm in diameter form in a
carbon film 5-10 nm thick, it is impossible to detect finer structures
on the image. (C) 1998 The Optical Society of America.
