N. Hailat et al., SHEEP PULMONARY ADENOMATOSIS ASSOCIATED WITH SYNCYTIAL CELLS AND INTRANUCLEAR INCLUSION-BODIES, The Cancer journal, 10(2), 1997, pp. 121-124
Sheep pulmonary adenomatosis (SPA), also known as ovine pulmonary carc
inoma, is a contagious neoplasm reported in many parts of the world, T
his is the first report of this disease in Jordan and presents particu
lar features not previously reported. A 3.5 year-old Awassi breed ewe
considered to be a potential case of SPA was sacrificed by euthanasia,
Its lungs, lymph nodes and trachea were carefully examined during pos
t-mortem examination and 5 Um-thick sections were taken for histopatho
logy, Both lungs were consolidated and had a marbled appearance, A pro
liferative-type lesion was seen, where the epithelium lining alveolar
spaces had grown in a single or mostly several layers, giving an appea
rance of papillary projections, Clusters of large cells (alveolar macr
ophages) in sheets, with dark eosinophilic cytoplasm and sometimes wit
h two nuclei, were seen in the alveolar spaces, Some of the cells had
an oval, intranuclear, eosinophilic inclusion bodies and in many regio
ns they developed syncytial formations and multinucleated giant cells,
It was concluded that the case was typical of SPA with the possibilit
y of an associated viral infection.
