Suppose two instruments I-0 and I-1 measure the same quantity with the
same resolution, where it is known that I-0 is more reliable. The sec
ond, I-1, is assumed a distortion of I-0 in some sense. A statistical
method is outlined where 1) the information from both I-0 and I-1 is c
ombined to increase the reliability of I-0 and 2) the distortion is qu
antified. An example is given in terms of shipborne precipitation rada
r and a spaceborne radiometer, both measuring rain rate.
