Abstract
In five-year experiments on ground water lysimeters (1.50 m deep) fill ed with organic sand soil, 0/80/120/160 kg ha(-1) of slurry nitrogen a nd 0/60 kg ha(-1) of fertilizer nitrogen were applied in equal rates t o winter rye and maize. Yield and N content of harvested crop as well as amount of water leached and N content in the leachate were measured . The following results were obtained: In all treatments, maize yielde d higher in total dry matter and in N removal than winter rye. Additio nal N leaching compared to the unfertilized plot was between 8 and 29 kg ha(-1) with winter rye and between 0 and 12 kg ha(-1) with maize. S ignificantly lower N leaching with maize was probably due to better ut ilisation of soil nitrogen mineralized in late summer.
