Pn. Patel et al., ACID FUNCTIONAL ACRYLIC COPOLYMER MODIFIED ALKYDS FOR APPLICATIONS INSURFACE-COATINGS - II, Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research, 57(2), 1998, pp. 70-78
Acid-functional n-butylmethacrylate-co-maleic anhydride copolymers of
varying composition have been synthesized by free radical initiated so
lution polymerization technique and characterized. These copolymers ha
ve been used, in varying proportions, to modify Rubberseed Oil (RSO)-b
ased alkyd resins to obtain a series of acrylated alkyds. Various film
properties of these: acrylated alkyds and their combination with buty
lated melamine formaldehyde resin in different proportions have been s
tudied. Composition of acrylic copolymers, the degree of modification
and curing conditions with the properties exhibited by their films hav
e been correlated. The acid-functional acrylic copolymer modified alky
ds can be used as co-curing resins with melamine formaldehyde resins t
o prepare baking type coating compositions. These resins show superior
film properties and they can be used as binders for industrial mainte
nance coatings.
