Although it has been reported that emboli from atherosclerotic disease
may be more frequent than commonly appreciated, hepatic infarction ca
used by an arterial embolus is an unusual but serious complication. Th
e authors describe a patient who had a secondary liver infarct during
anticoagulant treatment for cerebral infarction. The thrombus causing
the liver infarction was detected as a low echoic mass by transesophag
eal echocardiography at the right coronary sinus.
