A portable benthic annular flume for the in situ measurement of suspen
sion feeding (biodeposition rates) and erosion potential of undisturbe
d intertidal cohesive sediments with benthic biota is described. The e
xperimental procedures used during deployment are also outlined. Resul
ts shoeing the changes in biodeposition rates, sediment resuspension,
erosion rates and critical erosion velocities associated with large-sc
ale (km) and small-scale (m) spatial differences are presented. Compar
ison between laboratory and in situ measurements demonstrated marked d
ifferences in sediment erodability if the physical and biological prop
erties of the sediment are not maintained. (C) 1998 Academic Press Lim
