Abstract
Optical fibres irradiated by a CW UV laser were found to have a mechan ical resistance of 5GPa similar to that of pristine fibre. A compariso n of fibre exposed to pulsed and CW irradiation shows that there is si gnificantly higher mechanical degradation in the pulsed case when comp arable doses are used.
