Sulfuric acid containing limited amounts of water, H2SO4 . nH(2)O with
0.23 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 4, has been studie
d by H-1 broad-line NMR at 4 K and MAS NMR at room temperature. The br
oad-line NMR spectra indicate the formation of H3O+ and HSO4- ions. H2
SO4 . 2H(2)O is correctly written as H3O+HSO4-. H2O. The results are c
ompared with the Nafion-H/water system.
