The O-17 NMR spectra for a series of beta, gamma or gamma, delta unsatur
ated alcohols are reported. The chemical shift variation due to the in
troduction of the double bond in the beta, gamma or gamma, delta positio
n was found to be small, with the effect of beta, gamma unsaturation be
ing larger than that of gamma, delta unsaturation. The substituent chem
ical shift (SCS) effects of methyl substitution for beta, gamma or delt
a hydrogens were also determined. A linear correlation between the O-1
7 chemical shift for the alcohol (ROH) and the C-13 chemical shift for
the methyl groups in the corresponding hydrocarbon (RCH3) was obtaine
d, allowing predictions of the O-17 chemical shift from corresponding
C-13 data. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
