This paper presents test results from SCARLET (solar concentrator arra
y with refractive linear element technology) experiments performed on
several Lewis Research Center Lear jet flights and two JPL balloon fli
ghts, The tests rt,ere performed in support of the BMDO-sponsored SCAR
LET II program, which is building a 2-6-kW SCARLET to supply the prima
ry power for the JPL New Millennium Deep Space I Mission, The experime
nts involve TECSTAR dual-junction GalnP(2)/GaAs/Ge cells flown bare an
d under two different types of SCARLET lenses, The two types of lenses
tested were a developmental design consisting of a monolithic fluorop
lastic and the current baseline flight design consisting of cel ia-dop
ed microsheet and silicone, Measured lens and total module efficiencie
s are presented and the flight data ave compared to various solar simu
lator test results, (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
