Iron oxide sorbents supported on high surface area (49 m(2) g(-1)) SiC
have been prepared and characterized. The results show that several f
orms of iron oxide can coexist including gamma-Fe2O3, alpha-Fe2O3 and
an amorphous phase, and these phases are homogeneously dispersed on th
e SiC surface (particle size from 1 to 5 nm). After controlled calcina
tion the sorbent pore size distribution, measured by N-2 adsorption, r
anged from 2.5 to 50 nm, which allowed a high accessibility of the rea
ctant gas without microdiffusion phenomena.
