Abstract
A study on the transmission limitations of an all-optical network usin g an NxN multi/demultiplexer or wavelength router is presented. Modell ing results show that such a network can support up to 400 wavelength channels transparently over a distance of similar to 1000km. The impli cation of these results is that a centralised wavelength routing node could provide interconnection on a national scale.
