This article is based on a report made to the Electronic Journal and L
earned Societies Project, part of the Electronic Libraries (eLib) Prog
ramme. It is concerned with investigations undertaken in late 1996 int
o the commercial services able to provide an online electronic documen
t delivery service for academic journals on behalf of the small societ
y publisher unwilling or unable to provide an independent service. Thi
rteen organizations were approached and a questionnaire circulated to
them was returned by the majority. The results indicated that at that
stage there vas no obvious choice of one supplier ro meet the needs of
an small society publisher. The reasons for this are discussed and po
ssible ways forward considered.
