Abstract
Colloidal sol-gel processing is used to produce optical fibre. Fumed s ilica dispersed in water is cast, gelled, and dried. Tubes thus formed are heat treated to dehydrate, to purify and to vitrify. They exceed 4 kg and, when used to overclad conventional core-rods, yield optical fibre meeting exacting commercial standards.
