Abstract
Self-organized formation of quasi-one-dimensional surface oxide domain s on Cu(110) leads to a one-dimensional confinement of a Shockley surf ace state. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra show t he appearance of singularities in the density of states expected for t he. critical points of quasi-one-dimensional subbands. At higher oxyge n coverages disorder decouples the individual domains (Anderson locali zation) and a pronounced quantum size shift of the resulting quantum w ell states is observed.
