A pattern synthesis technique for low sidelobe arbitrarily scanned dif
ference beams in small planar phased arrays is presented. The approach
is based on adaptive array theory and is the development of a techniq
ue used for radiation pattern synthesis in linear arrays. The method h
as been applied to measured element pattern data from a small planar a
rray, which includes the effects of pattern corruption by mutual coupl
ing. The successful synthesis of low sidelobe difference beams is demo
nstrated, with arbitrary difference plane and scan angle.
