Rg. Bengis et Cm. Veary, PUBLIC-HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE UTILIZATION OF WILDLIFE PRODUCTS IN CERTAIN REGIONS OF AFRICA, Revue scientifique et technique - Office international des epizooties, 16(2), 1997, pp. 586-593
The authors describe the public health risks associated with wildlife
products in certain regions of Africa. Most of the information present
ed is obtained from the Republic of South Africa, particularly the Kru
ger National Park. There are no statutory requirements in South Africa
regarding the general inspection of game carcasses prior to sale: how
ever, current regulatory inspection requirements are explained. Game f
arming systems in southern Africa are generally extensive systems with
wild herbivores living in a near-natural 'free-ranging' state. Severa
l pathological processes and disease entities have been confirmed in w
ildlife carcasses and these are listed with zoonotic implications.
