reast-conserving surgery and radiation therapy. Although most women ne
ed very limited surgery, some require a larger volume of resection to
attain a high level of local control, and some might even require a ma
stectomy. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge conce
rning the assessment of the adequacy of excision.
