Alkyl substituted dithieno[3,4-b:3',4'-d]thiophenes are subject to ele
ctrooxidative polymerization to afford electronically conductive polym
er films. Whereas the parent fused heterocycle has four alpha-thienyl
positions through which polymerization can occur, disubstituted monome
rs afford well-defined polymer structures. The 2,5-dioctyl analog is s
oluble in common organic solvents.
