Abstract
Partial (618 bp) nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytoch rome oxidase subunit 1 were determined for 14 species belonging to the endemial Baicaliidae family of molluscs. The usefulness of this mtDNA region for molecular phylogenetic studies of this family was evaluate d. Basing on the data obtained, interfamily phylogenetic links were re constructed. A hypothesis is put forward concerning the earliest event s in the evolution of the Baicaliidae molluscs.
