We report the Wittig reactions of thylhexyloxy)-1,4-xylylenebis(triphe
nylphosphonium bromide) with terephthalaldehyde, 1,4-naphthalenedicarb
aldehyde and 9,10-anthracenedicarbaldehyde. Two sets of model compound
s were synthesized. The first consisted of a central fragment of 2-met
hoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene straddled by two phenylv
inyl, naphthylvinyl or anthrylvinyl units. The second set contained de
rivatives of distyrylbenzene, distyrylnaphthalene and distyrylanthrace
ne with two methoxygroups in each styryl fragment. The photophysical b
ehavior of the polymers and model compounds was investigated through a
bsorbance, excitation and fluorescence spectroscopy.
