N. Celebisoy et al., CONTINUOUS MUSCLE-FIBER ACTIVITY - A CASE TREATED WITH ACETAZOLAMIDE, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 64(2), 1998, pp. 256-258
A case is reported of the continuous muscle fibre activity syndrome, w
hich includes a group of disorders characterised by sustained motor un
it activity due to hyperactivity of peripheral nerve motor axons. In t
his patient the muscle stiffness and myokymic movements were successfu
lly treated with acetazolamide, which acts as a membrane stabiliser ei
ther by blockade of chloride and bicarbonate membrane transport or by
producing kaliuresis and raising the transmembrane potential by decrea
sing extracellular potassium.
