The temperature dependence of atomic displacement in superconducting K
2RbC60 and non-superconducting Rb6C60 has been studied on the basis of
X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffrac
tion data for K2RbC60 at 10.2 K revealed that the occupancy of Rb+ ion
s at an octahedral site is not 100% but 71%. It has been found that at
omic displacements for C atom and metal ions in K2RbC60 show an increa
se around its superconducting critical temperature. Such an increase h
as not been observed in Rb6C60. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
