Abstract
The hypothesis is advanced that the purpose of the eyeball movements d uring REM sleep is to stir the aqueous humor behind the closed lids an d so avoid the risk that its stagnation could cause corneal anoxia. Th e relevance of the hypothesis to evolutionary biology and intensive ca re nursing is discussed. (C) 1998 Academic Press Limited.
