The optical properties of a new soluble PPP-type polymer, poly(benzoyl
-1,4-phenylene) (PBP), were studied. PBP films show bright blue photol
uminescence (PL) with a maximum emission at 433 nm. The PL quantum yie
ld of PBP in dilute chloroform solution is approximately 15%. Electrol
uminescence (EL) was investigated using PBP as the active layer in sin
gle and multilayer LEDs. The EL of all fabricated devices lies in the
blue region with a maximum brightness of about 100 Cd/m(2). These resu
lts show that PBP might be a promising material for optoelectronic dev
ice applications.
