The essential oil from bower heads of Egletes viscosa L. was investiga
ted for possible antinociceptive, anticonvulsant effects in mice and f
or antibacterial efficacy against resistant Staphylococcus aureus in v
itro. It was found to possess a significant dose-dependent analgesic a
ctivity as assessed by acetic acid writhing and formalin tests and als
o an anticonvulsant activity against convulsions induced by pentylenet
etrazol in mice. The plant oil displayed good antibacterial activity a
gainst resistant strains of S. aureus with the minimal inhibitory conc
entrations (MIC) ranging from 0.625 to 2.5 mu L/mL. (C) 1998 John Wile
