The antiprotozoal properties of six medicinal plants, used by the peop
le of Southern Mexico to treat diarrhoea, were evaluated in vitro agai
nst Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia trophozoites, the most a
ctive being the methanol extracts of Rubus coriifolius, Cuphea pinetor
um and Helianthemum glomeratum. Further activity guided fractionation
of Cuphea pinetorum roots extract led to the isolation of kaempferol a
